Welcome to a special episode of The Dental CEO Podcast, where I, Dr. Scott Leune, delve into the essential leadership skills that every dentist should cultivate to succeed not just in their clinics but in their broader community roles as well. Today, I will share personal stories, professional insights, and tactical advice on how to elevate your leadership within and beyond the dental office.

The Importance of Leadership in Dentistry

Leadership in dentistry extends far beyond the confines of managing a team or running a practice. It involves influencing your team, patients, and the larger dental community positively. From my own experiences starting during peak COVID times to navigating the dynamics of community initiatives, each phase of my career has underscored the need for adaptive, empathetic leadership.

Starting Small: Building Leadership from Ground Up

I recall my early days as a young professional stepping into leadership roles. Leadership isn’t about commanding authority but about nurturing relationships and building trust. Initially focusing on areas that genuinely interested me, like writing for dental publications, I gradually expanded my influence, eventually taking on editorial responsibilities. This approach of starting small and focusing on my interests allowed me to naturally grow into leadership roles without being overwhelmed.

Empathy and Active Listening: Core Leadership Skills

One of the fundamental aspects of leadership is listening—active, patient listening. Whether it’s interacting with clients or discussing with peers, understanding their perspectives and needs can greatly influence the positive outcomes of any discussion. During my tenure, learning from mentors and echoing their ethos of patient-first communication has been pivotal in shaping my approach to leadership.

Yes to Opportunities: Embracing Challenges with Open Arms

When opportunities present themselves, saying ‘yes’ can often lead you down paths you might never have considered. Being open to new experiences has not only broadened my professional landscape but also enhanced my personal growth. It allowed me to connect with people and projects that aligned with my career objectives, echoing the sentiment that sometimes, a simple ‘yes’ can be a gateway to remarkable journeys.

Paying It Forward: The Power of Mentorship

Inspiring the next generation of dental professionals is something I hold dear. Serving on committees and boards, I have seen firsthand the impact of fostering a supportive environment for new dentists and dental students. Mentorship is not just about guiding the less experienced; it’s about lifting them up to the stage where they can shine on their own.

As dental professionals, our approach to leadership can dramatically influence how we practice dentistry and lead our lives. I challenge you to engage more, listen deeply, and take on roles that push your boundaries, allowing you to grow not only as a professional but as an individual within your community.

Leadership Beyond the Clinic

Leadership in dentistry isn’t confined to the four walls of your practice. It extends to every interaction you have, from patient consultations to community outreach programs. My journey has taught me that leadership is about making impactful decisions that foster growth, trust, and respect, both within the office and in the broader dental community.

Leverage every opportunity to lead by example and be the change you wish to see in the dental industry. With persistence, empathy, and a readiness to learn and adapt, you can shape not only your career but the future of dentistry.
